Oboth-Oboth elected Speaker, Tayebwa returns as Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament

KAMPALA — Hon. Jacob Oboth-Oboth has today been elected Speaker of the 12th Parliament of Uganda, securing a commanding 441 votes against Democratic Party president and Laroo-Pece Division MP Norbert Mao.

Hon. Thomas Tayebwa was returned to the office of Deputy Speaker, continuing in the role he held in the 11th Parliament.

The pair were sworn in shortly after the vote at Parliament Buildings in Kampala. In his maiden address, Speaker Oboth-Oboth thanked Members for the trust and pledged to lead a House that is "consultative, efficient and rooted in the Constitution," prioritising legislation that supports Uganda's socio-economic transformation.

Deputy Speaker Tayebwa called on Members to "set the tone of a Parliament that listens, debates respectfully, and delivers for the people of Uganda."

The election follows the endorsement of both candidates by the NRM Parliamentary Caucus after all other ruling-party aspirants stepped down. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the leadership of opposition parties have congratulated the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
